Will Rogers said “If you ever injected truth into politics you’d have no politics.”

It is difficult to insert the suppository of truth into the body politic, but we can at least excise a few malignant tumors of misinformation.

Today my new book, Shooting The Bull, is released into the wild. Subtitled “a field guide to identifying political lies in real-time”, Shooting The Bull helps you, the overworked taxpayer, to identify political lies while they are being told.  It sharpens your BS detectors by exposing all common forms of political perjury, how they are created and cast into the rhetorical winds.  Forearmed you can sense when you are being duped (which is almost constantly) and find specific fault within flummery and failed “facts.”

The book also drives a long and rusty nail into the coffin lid of the gun control movement, because they are my case study throughout the book.

It took perhaps three moths to write Shooting The Bull and nearly a decade to prepare.  Before turning the crank on my word processor, I had authored and edited a tome titled Gun Facts, whose only mission was to debunk gun control mythology.  After ten years of tearing apart sound bites spewed by the Brady Campaign, the Violence Policy Center, and Barack Obama’s own Joyce Foundation, I came to the realization that the gun control industry couldn’t go an hour without lobbing a new lie.  They had unwittingly provided me with a Catalog of Canards, a credible compendium of calumny.  Little additional effort was required to collect and produce the book you are about to buy.

For fans of in-your-face story telling, Shooting The Bull offers a lot to like.  Aside from my acerbic prose – which is slightly more corrosive than Nancy Pelosi’s smile – the book “names names” and outs those people who hoodwinked the world.  In the academic foreword (yes, this book has the endorsement of professorial types who specialize in communications) Brian Patrick notes “[Smith] also makes dreaded ad hominem attacks, wherein one refers to an idiot or liar as an idiot or liar.”  There may be some small penalty to pay for being blunt, but when contrasted to the cretins pimping pistol prohibitions, blunt beats buncombe.

Yet the book is just the start for you to engage in the art of political prevarication pinpointing.  A nascent web site (ShootingTheBull.net) has been created so anyone detecting political lies can participate in their dissection.  It matters not if you are a Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, or even one of the chosen people (libertarians) – ShootingTheBull.net has a space open for you to assail the other sides and attempt to cut-out cancerous misinformation.  ShootingTheBull.net is your place to make the bums squirm.

For those ready to buy (and who wouldn’t be after such a bombastic introduction), you can obtain a copy in both electronic and dead tree formats:
