Perhaps militant Islamist are gay, which certainly explains Osama bin Laden’s clothing choices and dramatic tantrums.

Nowhere is the inhumanity of religion gone wild shown as with the way fundamentalists Islamist treat women, who are at best property and at worst nothing in the eyes of their male monarchs. Where fascists satanically hide behind misinterpreted verses, you find woman stripped of anything resembling humanity. Indeed the burka, that one-size-fits-all hooded momo, is certainly designed not to expose a woman’s individuality and the work of Gawd that she is, but to hide her in a uniform and uniformly ugly manner.  Whomever thought of the burka sought to objectify women by demoting them to mere interchangeable objects.

The intersection of religion and inhumanity appears to be an (in)human trait, recurring with alarming frequency throughout our sorry history.  Aztecs were overly fond of eviscerating live humans while the Pope had a hunch that the only way to remove the stain of some sins was to burn people alive.  Even Moses collaborated with the Almighty to snuff every first born male in all of Egypt, something Hosni Mubarak probably wishes he had tried a couple of decades ago.  Bloodshed and bibles tends to go together, as does slavery.

Which brings us back to burkas. Ignore for the moment Islamist arguments about needing to constrain the sexual impulses of men (which burkas do with amazing efficiency), for that was a ploy of potentates who didn’t want their harem’s ova supply absconded by someone else’s seeds.  The only other functional purpose of the garment is to remove from women public self identification – to rob them of being individuals, and hence of being people. Since people tend to endorse what they already believe, and accept any sloppy justification for doing so, forcing women to wear veils, especially ones that wrap around and scrape the ground, is merely some men’s misuse of religion for their own preconceptions.  Men, being the arrogant twits they oft are, have misogynistic castes.  In Islam these rodents make their women wear burkas because they wrongly believe that women are inferior. (A note to any jihadists reading this post: I’d put any gal born below the Mason-Dixon Line up against your fiercest warrior, knowing our southern girls are more of a man than you could ever be … and that those sassy cats would come armed with their own hardware).

In secular states where Islam is widely practiced, burkas are a bit rare.  Take the Turks and their soldiers pictured here (at least that was the claim in a set of photos forwarded to me by a Pentagon-bound cousin – I can’t read the insignia on their shapely shoulders). A burka may be a uniform, but it is crafted to conceal the nature of the person forced to wear it.  These Turkish gals wear a uniform as well, but do so with pride, showing their personalities, their individuality and their strength, unlike the stick wavers above.

I’d love to see the western world create a campaign to arm oppressed Islamic women, and teach them how to thin their tribes of the malcontents who enforce dress codes.  To quote someone brave enough to be fairly public about his taste in women, “a little rebellion now and then is a good thing.”
