“Hello?” shouted the registration nurse. “Everybody! See this man here?”
We had no choice. Red Cross blood donor waiting rooms are not a gallery of amusing distractions, and the gentleman standing at the sign-in counter easily cleared six foot three – kinda hard to miss. He might have shrunk to six-two if he had removed his motorcycle boots, but doing so would have taken him out of uniform, something frowned upon by the California Highway Patrol.
“He’s on his lunch break, so does anyone want to let him go first since he only has a few minutes?”
For once someone beat me to the punch. In fact several people did. We all wanted as many bleeders as possible for the bank, and I suspect the waiting room was littered with people who appreciated cops and their service (Note to politicians: Stop calling yourselves “public servants.” You aren’t and you don’t begin to compare to the average patrol officer, especially one who gives away his own blood while 10-10.)
There is nothing more fundamentally humanitarian than saving a human life. Cops do this daily. Highway patrol officers not only save lives but also have the grisly task of mopping up people who don’t survive crashes. Perhaps that is what motivated this officer, having seen his share of people bleed-out. Or perhaps he’s simply understands that blood can’t be manufactured and wants to help in the only way possible. T’is the policeman’s nature. The average officer helps more people each day than the average Joe does each year.
This patrolman was skipping lunch in order to do even more.
