I find this idea of the religion of 'Gaia' quite interesting.

Cynicism aside, there is quite a credible theory that a 'global brain' is awakening.
This video explains it quite well.

I also did this 'wiki' page.

With all religions it seems there are authentic seers, mystics, who experience first hand what the religion is about. In this particular religion of 'Gaia' or earth the seers could be likened to the shamans, using entheogens to help them on visionary journeys, giving them insight into things that modern science is still only guessing at.
Surely these shamans have a place within such a religion and wouldn't a new religion be a change from the old.
It seems for too long religion have been about some Man in Heaven, so wouldn't it be nice to worship something that actually exists in some physical form, bringing the spiritual down to the physical.
And perhaps such a planetary consciousness does exist.

And as usual with religions the real issue (and in this case it is surely our relationship to our planet) gets overlooked by bickering arguements and fights for prestige.
