Murder suicides are rare affairs. Political death packs even more so.
The politically astute among you should mentally record the spectacle of John Kerry who in 30-words-or-less managed to assassinate his own party, and snuff his own political aspirations.
Being a Southern Gent I am obligated to buy whatever unbelievable claim to momentary inadequacy Kerry puts forth, so I’ll swallow hard and assume he did actually botch an intended joke. This takes a mighty effort to ingest given that he would need at least a dozen extra words to make what he actually said be a Bush insult.
What has no compare in the annals of political idiocy is his reluctance … of perhaps inhumanity … to apologize for the slip. Only the most insensitive knave could ignore how his statement might have offended active military, their families, or anyone like myself who hold soldiers, sailors, and marines in hero status (yes, Coasties too).
Yet there was Kerry the day after his “misstatement” refusing to apologize to anyone. His critical mistake was being overwhelmed by a desire for political sound-bite superiority to a degree that obfuscated his ability to have compassion, and worse yet compassion for people who are suffering for the good of others.
The response from fellow Democrats was immediate, strong, unyielding, and damming. To have national political power one must have the love and support of their own party. Any affection Kerry had before his “unintentional” insult of the troops has been eased into the grave. Kerry can no longer seek the presidency for not even his own party would allow it.
If God wears dog tags, Kerry might not even hold onto his Senate seat when it next comes to vote.
